The Leatherman's Loop

What is better than fording streams, plodding through the spring mud, witnessing wonderful feats of athleticism, and enjoying a day outdoors at one of the most amazing parks in the Westchester County Parks System?! This Sunday, April 25th, Ward Pound Ridge Reservation will be transformed into a slippery, muddy, challenge course for hundreds of "Leathermen" (and women) who choose to run this annual 10K race.

The Leatherman Loop is an annual competition of wills which includes crossing streams, picking through rocks and tree roots, avoiding deer (who strangely enough ran into an eleven year old boy a few years back) and running with a pack of hundreds of other runners on small trails.

Maybe this sounds like mayhem, or maybe the challenge appeals to you in some way (there should be some reason you have been going to the gym all of these months), but I have to say that either way it seems like a great excuse to visit Pound Ridge Reservation and check out the action. The race benefits local charities, you can register up to an hour before the race start time, and it only costs $15 to sign up and run (plus an $8 entry fee for the park).

Now, if you are not convinced to actually exert yourself in the race, consider a trip to the Reservation itself. Ward Pound Ridge Reservation includes 4,700 beautiful wooded acres in Cross River, NY. It hosts more than 35 miles of hiking trails and nature trails, camping facilities, and picnic tables. It is a great way to get out and enjoy these beautiful spring days and an even more exciting and easy way to test out whether your family enjoys camping. You are close enough to home to return in the middle of the night, yet can enjoy enough "nature" to let your kids feel like they've really had an adventure.

Ward Pound Ridge also maintains the Trailside Nature Museum which displays taxidermic mounts of local wildlife, historical relics, and Native American artifacts. They run interesting children's lectures, programs, and family adventures-- call the main office for a calendar of events at 914.864.7317 or click on the link below to visit their site (or check Essential Mom's event pages!).

A New Twist on an Old Wall

More and more throughout Westchester, families are showing an interest in "fixer-upper" houses and customizing them with new decorative tricks and techniques to make them into the special show places they have always dreamt of for their families.

Enter Robin Weiss of Paint Your World, a custom-mural business that helps the customer feel unique, different, and fashionable-- without having to break the bank. Robin works with her clients to transform ordinary walls, unusual spaces, corners or niches into magical sanctuaries for adults and children. Fun and whimsical details abound in her work-- each time a child looks at one of Robin's murals, they will discover something new and interesting that sparks their curiosity or engages their imagination.

Robin's work graces the walls of the North Shore Hebrew Academy's Early Childhood Center in Great Neck, Big!s Furniture Store in Yonkers, and throughout numerous residential homes in Westchester. Most recently Robin completed the above cabin scene in the playroom of the Hirsch Family of Bedford, NY. The family has been quoted as feeling that the log cabin decor is "so realistic, it's like a getaway retreat within my own home". Who wouldn't love that? Personally, my playroom is like a garage sale gone wrong!

Robin holds a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree from the University of Michigan and worked in the textile and apparel industry for more than 14 years before launching Paint Your World in 1999. To contact Robin, please call 718.997.1435 or visit her web site through the link provided below. Check it out-- you'll be amazed by her craftmanship and creativity.
